A Poem by BICO Transportation…

We would like to take a moment and do something a little bit differently, and that is share a poem. Writing is subjective; especially poetry, and so to share this with you is exciting.

Seeing Shannon

Every morning getting up to go
Always hardest part of Josh’s day
Leaving Shannon, saying goodbye
Another long drive ahead

Kiss the kids
Kiss the wife
Kiss her once, twice, three more times
Out the door, she kicks him out

Out the window, seeing many things
Cars pass
Neighbor’s wave
Unfortunately, Shannon couldn’t come out today

He meets the people
Hauls the load
He meets the people
Drops off the load

Long day
New friends to make
Business done
Money made

A long drive, no surprise
Miles pass and coming home
Smiles grow
Mr. Fendell is finally home

BICO Hauls It All

Can you see this pic?

Blow it up and look at it closely…

This load is for a brewing company.

This is another example of what we do…

Because we do it all.

If you want a load of hay moved…that’s us.
If you want a church piano and all of the pews moved…that’s us.
If you want an RV moved…that’s us.
If you want a building moved…that’s us.
If you want a tow truck moved…that’s us.
If you want turbines moved…that’s us.

Those are just a few examples of what we do because we do so much more.

BICO Transportation is the leader in ground transportation because we know what we are doing.

Simple as that…

We know what we are doing.

Unfortunately not all of our competition can say that.

Even the big transportation and hauling outfits do a couple of things that we disagree with

1. Hire drivers that do the bare minimum and do not care about the load because it’s not theirs, and so they take no responsibility for damage or tardiness.

2. Being ok with having a pre-set percentage of allowable damages.

Once BICO picks up a load, it becomes part of our trailer, and we treat it as though it was ours. We take responsibility for our actions. Every load we transport is the most important task that we do because it is your stuff, and we take care of your stuff.

Ok…

You caught us…

BICO Transportation also has a percentage of acceptable losses and damages (similar to the big guys).

Except ours is 0% (zero percent).

We have never, and will never, pick something up and say, “Ok…we can afford to break this piece”.

WE are NOT EVERY OTHER trucking company out there because every other company has a number that they are ok with when it comes to “acceptable” damage.

Don’t take our word for it…

Ask them!!!

Pick any trucking company, and ask them how much stuff gets broke on a daily or weekly basis. If you want a real answer, ask the drivers.

If you want the best…you have to work with the best...you have to hire the best.

For all of your hauling needs…

Let’s Beat a Dead Horse and Talk About Safety

This is a follow-up to our last post.

Why are we doing a follow-up? Because safety is that important.

The photo of this truck is real and we saw it happen.

Could the accident have been avoided? Yes!

Could the accident have been worse? Yes!

Remember from our last post…our first goal is to make it home every night, and we work really hard to make sure that happens.

Let’s give you an example:

There is an employee walking through a warehouse and trips over a pallet. Without any other details, who’s at fault? The employee who tripped of course.

Now let’s add the fact that the pallet was placed there by another employee who left it there to go help a customer. Now who’s at fault? Still the answer is the employee who tripped.

So the question comes down to what the employee was doing prior to tripping, and we have recently seen three perfect real-life examples…

1. The employee was talking to another employee as they were walking. The one employee took her surroundings for granted and was looking at her coworker as they walked, resulting in her tripping and falling.

2. An employee was “running” backwards in the warehouse, and not paying attention to his surroundings, resulting in him tripping and falling.

3. An employee was carrying items in his arms that blocked his view. He ended up tripping, falling, and damaging merchandise.

All of these examples are of accidents that could have been avoided, just like the accident in the photo from above.

It doesn’t matter if you are walking, driving, or sitting on your couch…accidents can happen, and they can also be avoided.

The moral of the story is pay attention to what you are doing.

We want to make it home every night.

We want you to make it home every night.

We don’t want to see anyone get hurt.

When you think BICO, think safety, and if you are unsure or have questions about a safety issue…reach out to us and we’ll be happy to help in any way that we can.

From the BICO family to yours…

Safe travels!!!!

P.S. Here is a little safety video from TV’s Mike Rowe…

Accidents Happen When You Get Comfortable

Sorry for the blurry picture, but don’t worry, we were being safe trying to hurry up and snap a pic in stopped traffic.

However…

The quality of the image isn’t as important as the message within the photo.

100% of all accidents happen when there is a high comfort level.

And what does that mean?

It means that people stop giving their full attention and accidents happen.

This also means that 100% of accidents can be avoided.

There are examples of this everyday
  • “I’ve been driving truck for 20 years.”
  • “I use this band saw 6 times a day.”
  • “I know how much alcohol I can consume.”

No matter what it is…

Pay attention to what you are doing.

Like our photo…

We don’t know how long the driver had been driving, his experience, or anything, but we do know that he flipped a semi upside down.

We also know that it could have been avoided.

Look…

We’re not trying to be jerks…

But…

Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

We don’t know how the semi went off of the road, and until the official story comes out (if it comes out) it is just a guessing game…
  • Maybe the driver slept in a little too long and was trying to make up time on the icy roads?
  • Maybe the driver had been driving this same stretch of pavement for years and “knew what to expect”?
  • Maybe a vehicle in front of the truck wasn’t being safe and the truck driver tried to avoid an accident?

All of those scenarios could have been avoided.

And yes…

Everybody has and will have plenty of accidents in their lives (like dropping a TV on your foot)…

Including our family.

But…

BICO as a company has never had an accident.

Why?

Because safety comes first.

When we go out on a job, our first goal is to come home.

Our second goal is to protect our livelihood because without our trucks and trailers we can’t pay the bills.

Our third goal is you and your property. When we pick up a load, your property then becomes part of our second goal because it is on, and is part, of our trailer.

We never get comfortable on the road or on a job because we don’t want to end up like that semi or worse.

We save all the crazy stuff for when we take a weekend off and go play in the woods with our family and friends.

Please…

Be safe in everything that you do.

And…

If you want to make sure that your load reaches its destination 100% of the time with zero damage…

Why Working with Family is the Best

You have heard it a thousand times…

Never work with family

Never hire family

Never work with friends

Never hire friends

And that is true for most people because they cannot separate business from non-business.

Relationships (business and personal) get damaged every day.

But…

There are exceptions. There are companies who have been successful because of personal relationships.

Companies like BICO Transportation.

And we’re going to share some of those reasons for success right now

Love – Josh and Shannon are absolutely head-over-heels in love with each other; although love itself doesn’t make for good business, it’s the effort that each of them put into the relationship to be the best that they can be, and to make the other person the center of their world. Plus, they like being around each other.

Trust – Josh and Shannon trust each other, without a doubt, with every inch of their being. They trust that the other person will always be there trying their best in both their personal and business life.

Vision – The Fendell’s have a shared vision when it comes to reality. It doesn’t always start off that way, because one of them will have this “great idea” and the other one will have to reel them back in, but what that does is create conversation about what they can and can’t do within reason. They talk to each other, and make plans together.

Partners – Josh and Shannon are partners in every aspect of their lives; as husband and wife, as parents to some of the best kids out there, and in their family owned business (BICO Transportation). They make decisions together every day, and doing so in business was not a huge shift in their relationship because they communicate as partners effectively and efficiently already.

Goals – Shannon has her goals. Josh has his goals. The Fendell’s have their goals. BICO has its goals. The truly great part about the Fendell’s goal setting is that everyone has things that they are trying to accomplish, and as a family they are there for each other to help everyone grow. The same thing in business; BICO has goals, and as a family they pull together to make those goals a reality.

Dorkiness – Sometimes you have to laugh at yourself. Sometimes you have to laugh at someone else. You have to laugh and enjoy life, not at the expense of others as in being mean, but as in those dumb mishaps that we all say and do (intentionally and unintentionally) that make everyone around us laugh, including ourselves. Josh and Shannon have a bunch of stories that are hilarious that they love to share about each other, and they continue to make each other laugh on a daily basis. Life is too short to be serious all of the time, and the Fendell’s know that.

So these have been some of the reasons behind the success of BICO Transportation, and Josh and Shannon’s relationship in general. These are not all of the reasons, nor are they in-depth because we could literally write a book on each piece of the list.

In closing…

Should you work with family?

If you are BICO…yes.

For everyone else, ask yourself (and be honest), do you have what Josh and Shannon Fendell have?

For all of your hauling needs…

An old-school handshake type of transportation company.
